Abstract Paint

Tate Modern London

Our last day in the UK, London, was a visit to Tate Modern art museum...it did not disappoint! As usual, I get so excited, starry eyed and overwhelmed by the art that I just stand there and stare...and very often don't photograph! Though there were moments I wanted to make note of...and here are a few.

Tate has a wonderful variety of modern art...from the opening painting here by Picasso, and another of his pieces above left...along with one of my favorites (and possibly future clay work inspiration) Giorgio Morandi...and the brush strokes of "The Little Peasant" by Modigliani.

I forgot the artist on this one...but was drawn in by the clearly abstract paint, texture and assemblage aspects of this piece...all on a very traditional tapestry backdrop. It's crazy...and it works!

Being up close and looking through all the layers in these pieces by Jackson Pollack, Lee Krasner and Joan Mitchel is really interesting and eye opening. Proof once again that art is best seen up close to understand it better...and far way when you step back and take it all in.

Standing in a very large room with very large paintings by Joan Mitchell was emotionally moving. You could feel her working on these oversized canvas in her large studio and understand the difference and freedom it invites to work large with few boundaries.

One of my favorite pieces was by Ukrainian artist Kazimir Malevich...Dynamic Supermatism...created in 1915!!! Amazing that this modern abstract...was created during the First World War!!!

There of course we're many bright and colorful artworks in this collection. The one on the left is a Matisse, a large piece created when he was unable to paint, using papers and his assistants to lay it out. Read more about this below.

Again...the photos I've shared here are also notes that I have to remind myself of shapes and marks that resonate with me the next time I stand in front of a blank canvas ready to create.

My little hummingbird travel, photo, muse also found a new friend at the Tate...

...he gets to come along with us on the rest of the trip...I hope they can behave!

Next stop...Portugal...see you there!
