Have you ever painted on loose canvas, got carried away and forgot to leave a boarder for stretcher bars? Or...you just wanted to practice and play around on loose canvas and the piece turned out better than you thought with no room left over to add a frame or stretch it? Well...I have too...as a matter of fact I have four, maybe even five painted loose canvases that I want to hang.
One way that works really well is to add grommets to your canvas, and while I haven't tried this method here's a link on how to install a grommet... GROMMETS.
The method I like best, and one I've used on several canvases, is adding wood pieces to the top to hang the loose canvas from, as well as wood pieces on the bottom to weigh it down so it hangs straight.
Other than cutting the loose canvases up into smaller pieces and framing them (I don't really want to do this)...I love the way these look hanging, though I'm curios as to what you think. Is this a look you would use in your home? Below are two of the pieces hanging in my corner of the stuio at F1VEart. Which do you prefer...hanging or framed...curiouse artist mind wants to know! Feel free to leave your comment below.
If you think you might like to try wood hangers...click the photo below and I'll show you how.
In the meantime...
I'm getting ready for my two weeks in Gallery 21 / Spanish Village / Balboa Park / San Diego.
I'm excited to have the space all to my self...and my art in such a nice roomy gallery.
I'll talk more about my show in the next few weeks...though for now I hope you'll save the date for one of the days I'm in Gallery 21...

I love the look/option of hanging the canvases loose with the bars at top and bottom. For my own home, which is very traditional with lower ceilings, I opt for frames or deep, unframed canvases, but think these loose hanging ones are VERY fitting to your work and to many spaces. Love following your work and enthusiasm!
Denise, I absolutely love the look of hanging the loose canvas with the grommets and the molding! I think it adds beautiful dimension. You’re so talented. I’m obsessed with your art. I haven’t had time to finish my first mixd media painting yet but it’s such fun. Requires a lot more space than my watercolors.
Good luck in Spanish Village! It was fun seeing you in Little Italy...I prefer the framed or mounted canvases for my particular home which is a bit more conservatively decorated; but, I can see where for some more trendy /modern type spaces the loose hanging with wood could work well, too.......
